Frequently Asked Questions

I'm from a Rotary club. Where can I find more information?

If you are from a Rotary and are looking to sponsor a candidate or for more information, please see our dedicated section for Rotary.

I am outside of the age eligibility. Can I still apply?

Depending on demand, we may be able to accept candidates outside of the required age brackets. Best to get in contact with us.

What are the dates for RYLA this year?

RYLA is held every January in Sydney - usually the first or second week. For this year's date, see our dates page.

Where is RYLA located?

The location of RYLA may change from year to year. This year's venue can be found at our dates & location page.

I don't have a leadership position. Is RYLA still appropriate for me?

At RYLA, we think where you're going is more important than where you have been. If you think you have the potential to be a great leader, then RYLA is perfect for you.

Some specific information about eligibility and some past candidates can be found here. If you are still unsure, we encourage you to apply anyway, or get in contact with us for more information.

When do applications close?

Information about application closing times can be found here. We are sometimes able to accommodate a candidate after the applications have closed, so please still fill out an application even if the deadline has passed, or get in contact with us for more information.

How much does RYLA cost?

Each candidate is generously sponsored by a local Rotary club of the Rotary 9685 district. All expenses, including accommodation, transportation, and event programming are included in this sponsorship. For more information about cost, read our cost and other details page or learn about the application process including how to apply through Rotary.

Do I have to apply through a rotary club or can I apply online?

If you have connections with a local Rotary club, then you can apply to them, but you don't need to.

You can sign up via our website and we will assign you to a club in the district who are looking to sponsor a candidate. The club will get in touch with you, or you can get in touch with the club first. Each club is different, so they may have a particular process that you are required to go through (such as attending a club meeting).

Your sponsoring club may send you to our website to fill out the application form. Just fill out the form normally and select the club which has nominated you where appropriate.

More information about the application process can be found here

I can't make one of the days at RYLA. Is this okay?

Attendance for the entire duration of the RYLA program is compulsory, and exemptions are granted only in exceptional circumstances. You will need to mention this in your application, and/or to your sponsoring Rotary club. If you are unsure, please get in contact with us, we would be happy to discuss your options.

Why choose RYLA?

RYLA is intensely focused on developing sophisticated and thoughtful leadership. This helps imbue a close community and comradery that is hard to replicate outside of RYLA. This means you will make life-long friends.

Unlike other programs, we also focus on giving you several practical hands-on opportunities to test your leadership in a controlled environment. Our program is unique in the sense that we tie the outcomes to self-improvement through considered reflection. This means that not only will you become a better leader, but you will retain the necessary skills to continue improving your leadership as you move forward in life.

I live outside of the 9685 district. Can I still apply?

Preference is given to candidates living or working inside the 9685 district. If you still don't meet these requirements, it is still worth applying, but we can't guarantee that you will be able to attend the program.

What is Rotary - how does it relate to RYLA?

Australian Rotary Clubs are part of an international network of business, professional and community leaders who strive to make the world a better place through practical efforts. There are over 1100 local Rotary clubs throughout Australia, and each of these is divided into one of 21 districts.

RYLA is a program aimed at young adults in the local community, borne out of a Rotary festival highlighting local youth, organised in honour of a royal visit in 1959 by Princess Victoria to Queensland, Australia.

RYLA is now run as a leadership program all over the world. Each Rotary district hosts their local RYLA conference.

This RYLA program runs in the district of 9685. It is run by a team of young adult volunteers who are former Rylarians themselves. Their work is overseen by the Rotary district's RYLA committee.

Where is the 9685 district located?

Rotary District 9685 is one of two districts covering the Sydney metropolitan area in Australia - roughly the northern half.

Its boundaries stretch from the Blue Mountains to the Sea north of Sydney Harbour, reaching across the Hawkesbury River and north to Toukley on the Central Coast.  Within its boundaries are the business districts of North Sydney, Chatswood, Gosford, Penrith, and the Ryde industrial area.  The Blue Mountains define its western boundary, beautiful beaches define its eastern border, and rural communities make up its western and northern borders.

More information about the district can be found here
